FFRC Blog Week Ending October 31, 2026
HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!
Halloween is a holiday celebrated each year on October 31. The tradition originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. In the 8th century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints. Soon afterward, All Saints Day incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows Eve, or simply Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a day of trick-or-treating, carving jack-o-lanterns, festive gatherings, wearing costumes, Halloween movies and eating treats. History.com
Here's some FFRC kitties getting into the spirit! By the way, cats don't really like to wear costumes!!!!
CHICA
We had a double adoption this week.
On October 31st, our BEAZLEE and WYNN were adopted. They went home to 4 big brothers. Thanks to Jabber for supplying blankets to both of these girls. The blankets were a gift from ZEEBA.
Beazlee
On 6/9/26, Beazlee was found in a woodpile with her two siblings, SHINE, now DOLLY, and NIGEL (still awaiting his furever home). They were born on 5/17/26. They all had severe eye infections. Debbie bottle-fed the babies until they were weaned. Beazlee will now be known as GRACIE.
Wynn
On 8/3/26, a utility worker found a small kitten and brought her to FFRC. Wynn's date of birth is 6/22/26. She had an injured tail when she arrived. The tip fell off, so now her tail is a bit stubby. Wynn's new name is MOLLY.
Intakes:
This week, we received a call that a family had four cats that needed to be placed. We worked with the Defiance County Humane Society and agreed to house the cats until there was an opening with the Humane Society. We received the 2 male and 2 females. Boys are in June's Room and Girls are in a double condo in Back Thumper's Room. A couple of the cats don't get along, so we had to keep them separate. The Humane Society should be picking the kitties up early next week.
On Friday Morning, we received a call about two cats whose home situation had changed. One is a return and the other had been with the former FFRC kitty for 7 or 8 years. Both kitties are Persians. The first one is a smaller calico named LINZEE. The larger kitty is a gray striped girl named ANGEL, but known as BEAR. Both kitties have matted fur that will need to be combed. We gave them both their needed nail trims. One kitty had 4-5 ingrown nails that we carefully trimmed. These kitties are together in Dodger's Pen until we have an opening in Back Thumper's Room.

Health Updates:
Dr. Darcy visited on Wednesday, 10/28. She looked over MANY indoor and outdoor cats, as well as how the center was running. We passed and so did our kitties. Because we have a number of aging kitties, we decided that it would be a good idea to have blood tests done. Also, a few kitties have known thyroid issues. The blood tests will let us know if medications need to be changed or added.

Here is the list of kitties going up for routine bloodwork.
11/2 JUNIOR and SMOKEY (two of our office kitties) and RAMSAY.
11/4 DERECHO, SPIKER, WALTER (our Deaf Covie CH kitty) and JJ (our outside boy) .
Walter Walter Walter
11/19 Our Covie, MAYOR ANONY, is having routine bloodwork done and surgery on one of his ears to remove what looks to be small growths.
On Thursday, Cindy took SCAMPER to Dr. Darcy's office to have her button removed. She is doing great. Because she is still so small, she will stay in Back Thumper's Room for a little while.Cindy also took MOOCHER to see the vet on Thursday. Moocher had been a bit lethargic and unfortunately, he was diagnosed with FIP. We had been monitoring him and had suspected that this was his issue. We had already started him on FIP medication and he is already responding to it. He is still pretty young and will be staying in Front Thumper's room during the early part of his treatment. Megan calculated the cost to treat one FIP kitty at $1,128.12.
The other FIP kitties are all responding well to their treatment and are getting really big.
Holds:
SMUDGES will be going home as soon as FIP treatment is complete. A reunion with DOLLY, formerly SHINE, will be a happy one.
We have a lot of applications that we are reviewing, so look for more holds and adoptions soon! We have had many requests for the "Meezers".
Center Kitties:
RAMSAY got a new house on Box Day. He loves it and his "Squeakers" bar.
BETTY enjoying some Fall sunshine in the back of the Buggy.
Here is sweet MIMBLE just waiting to be petted.
Updates on Adopted Kitties:
WHEELER had a scheduled trip to see Dr. Darcy this week. He had a cavity. Well, it turned out that 6 teeth had to be pulled. Poor Baby! Wheeler was the first FIP kitty to be treated at FFRC and was adopted by our own Cindy after his treatment was complete. Look how handsome he is. He still has his cowlick.
ALI was adopted a year ago. She is such a cutie!
TIGRESS is wishing everyone a Happy Halloween!

Chewy Wish List
Just One Day (A note from Megan):

68 CATS. ONE DAY. LET THAT SINK IN.

Yesterday alone (10/26/26), Friends of Felines Rescue Center received requests to take in 68 cats. In ONE day.
Not 68 cats over a month.
Not 68 cats over a week.
68 cats in a single day.
Take a moment to think about what that really means.
Every one of those requests represents cats who need help. Some may be kittens born into an already overcrowded world. Some may be adults whose families can no longer care for them. Others may be strays, abandoned cats, or cats living in situations where their basic needs aren’t being met.
And behind every request is a real animal who deserves safety, care, and a chance at a better life.
But here’s the hard reality: There are only so many cages, so many foster homes, so many available resources, and so many hours in a day.
We cannot say yes to every cat who needs us. Not because we don’t care. Not because their lives don’t matter. But because taking in more cats than we can safely and responsibly care for doesn’t help anyone.
Rescue work isn’t simply opening a door and letting cats in. Every cat needs food, litter, cleaning, vaccinations, testing, medical treatment, and, eventually, a safe and loving home. Some need extensive veterinary care. Others may stay with us for months or even years.
And all of that takes people, time, space, and money.

So, what can we do about it?

Spay and neuter your pets. Prevention is one of the most effective ways to reduce the number of unwanted litters.

Keep your pets for life. Bringing an animal into your family is a commitment, even when life gets difficult.

Adopt instead of shop. Every adoption opens a spot for another cat who needs help.

Consider fostering. Even a temporary home can make an enormous difference.

Support your local rescues. Donations, supplies, volunteering, and sharing adoption posts all help keep rescue work moving forward.

Be part of the solution. If you find a stray or discover a cat in need, consider what resources you can provide, too. Contacting a rescue is a starting point, but rescues cannot always take immediate custody of every animal reported to them.
At Friends of Felines, we see the need every single day. We see the faces, hear the stories, and know there are so many more cats who need help than there are available places to put them.
Yesterday’s 68 requests are a reminder that this problem is bigger than any one rescue can solve.
We need our entire community to be part of the solution.
Please share this post. Talk about spaying and neutering. Encourage responsible pet ownership. Support the organizations doing this work.
Because behind every number is a living, breathing animal who deserves a chance.

And 68 requests in one day? That’s 68 reminders of just how much work there is left to do.

October Review:
Jasper. He was only two days old. His mama had abandoned him but in the end he wasn't alone. He was an FFRC Kitty and no FFRC Kitty is truly alone.
Kabuki, again. She was returned after she just really did not like her new home. It's okay, sweetie, we'll try again.
Rich. This guy was skinny, skinny, skinny when he came to us! He was also very attention starved and, boy, does he love attention! If you're looking for the world's most affectionate cat, put in your application because you may have just found him. Valerie. She was found outside by a lady visiting from Texas. She's very sweet and hopes she doesn't have to wait long to find a home!
Vampy. She was thrown from a car and suffered a facial injury. But she's all healed up now and ready to begin her new life!
Scamper. She was also found with a facial injury consistent with being thrown from a car. But she's on the road to recovery and will be ready for her Forever Home soon!
Baby Whiskerton. Jasper's brother, he is currently being hand fed and doing well. He's got some growing to do until it's time to find a home!
Arulen, Benton, Cleavland, Felroah, and Sadie. This quintet of colorpoints were born to feral parents. The people who bought them have captured the mama who will be getting spayed soon. Their dad is proving more elusive but they're working on getting him, too. In the meantime, the babies are here and they are eager to find their families!
Linzee & Angel. Linzee is a return and Angel came along as they've been together for so long. These fancy are around 8-9 years old pure bred Persians and are looking for a special home of their own. We said "Have a Great Life!" to:
Juniper & Vivian! Our sweet Juniper's long wait is over! And Vivian has found her rightful home! They both now live in Missouri and both are keeping their names.
Zooky! Our fluffy, talkative lady has found her Forever Home in Pennsylvania. She is keeping her name.
Shine! This little girl chose her own humans! When they came in to look at kitties she made sure she was the one. It was the perfect match. Her name is now Dolly.
Timbit & Feisty! You know how sometimes you meet a cat and you just know they're yours? Well, that happened to Director Megan with the babies she was hand feeding. Congratulations to her and her husband! And to Egypt and Steven on their new siblings! Timbit is keeping his name while Feisty is now Elsa (after the actress who played the Bride of Frankenstein in 1935)
Guthrie! This sweet old lady has found the nice quiet home she's been waiting for! She is keeping her name.
Beazlee and Wynn! These sociable girls are going home today! Tune in at 1:30pm-ish to see them off!
Delta (Adoptable) turned 3
Otter (Shoulder Rider) turned 4
Mrs. Charles (Adoptable) turned 2
That's it for October! Can't wait to see what November brings! Here's how you can help! Or you can subscribe to our YouTube channel, like our videos, share our posts on social media, etc. Every little bit helps!

It’s that time of year again for helping FFRC stock our pantries. With Kitty Christmas approaching, we kindly ask that if you choose to participate you keep your contributions focused on necessities
For Kitty Christmas, please hold off on sending toys, beds, rugs, or anything that isn’t essential. We truly appreciate these thoughtful gifts, but this event is all about stocking the pantry
If you’re sending a package, please include “Kitty Christmas” on the shipping label so we know where to direct your donation. Monetary donations are also welcome, and you can note “Kitty Christmas.”

FFRC is hiring!
Megan will be out of the office next week starting late Monday afternoon.
Please make sure that you have a plan for your pets in the event that you are no longer able to take care of them. The best plan is to have both a primary and a secondary backup.

On 10/29, it was National Cat Day! Although at FFRC, that could be said about every day.
"If man could be crossed with the cat, it would improve man but deteriorate the cat."
"There are two means of refuge from the miseries of life: music and cats."

"What greater gift than the love of a cat."
