Also celebrated each September 1st is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day!

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is a lighthearted holiday dedicated to celebrating the unique charm and personalities of ginger cats, also known as orange tabbies.  The holiday was founded by software developer and animal rights activist Chris Roy, inspired by his own ginger cat, Doobert, who passed away at 17 years old in 2014 It has since become an annual event observed every September 1st, offering cat lovers a chance to honor both current and past feline companions.wikidates.org

Adoptions:

We had two adoptions on 8/3.

The first was our lovely DOLLY, now MOCHI!  Mochi arrived at FFRC on 8/22/26, and we knew right away that she would not be here long!  Mochi was familiar to us, because she had been through the Humane Ohio Spay/Neuter program.  Unfortunately, her family was being displaced and could no longer care for her.  Her date of birth is 5/1/25.  This soft, sweet and delightful little lady has found her furever home with our friends Stephanie and Tony.  We see them on camera quite often bringing IAMS food to us.  Stephanie had a Siamese when she was young and has been searching for the perfect kitty to call her own again.  Mochi will have some kitty friends at home + Betty, the Golden Retriever.  Here is a picture of Mochi at home with Stephanie and Tony.

The second adoption was BUEHLER.  This mischievous boy has found his new mommy and daddy!  He will be the only kitty in the home and will be keeping his name.  This little guy was found under Debbie's car after being dumped at FFRC.  He was very flea-ridden, but healthy.  Buehler's date of birth is 12/11/24.  Although, we will miss his hijinks, like stealing Denise's sandwich and playing in the trashcan on Box Day, we are so happy he has found a home--which is very close by.  Here he is "adjusting" the Kabana camera.

Friday brought us the adoption of LEMON.  This was Megan's Mud baby.  She was found under a shed after a terrible storm on 4/7/26.  Her date of birth is 3/22/26, so she was just a baby.  Megan placed her with WILLOW and they thrived together.  She started as a gray tiger and ended up much blonder.  Maybe a Touch of Sun or Sun In was used????  She is a beauty.  95% sure that Lemon will be keeping her name.  Terri supplied a blanket, Thank You!

And Now

We also had a double adoption of THOR and MALADE on 9/5 and there wasn't a dry eye in the house or on camera.  These kitties arrived at FFRC on 11/25/22--yes almost 4 years ago!  They were found with their brother, ZEKE locked in a shed.  Not sure how they got in.   All three kitties were in pretty bad shape--severe upper respiratory issues, eyes and nose closed by "goop", dirty ears and fleas.  Thor was the worst, he had open infected wounds, perhaps by rodent bites.  Under FFRC's care, they all prospered.  Zeke was adopted by Ann in 2023, and she came back for Thor and Malade, who will be keeping their names.  What a wonderful reunion this will be.  Will Zeke remember his siblings?   Ann also has Pixel and Morris from FFRC and until their passing, Penn and Teller--also from FFRC.  Thank you to Terri for supplying blankets and also Eric and Michelle.  We will be watching for updates on all of the FFRC alumni.  

Intakes:

We are FULL!

We did not receive any intakes this week.

Health Updates:

We lost our sweet little TAYLA on 8/31.  She wasn't feeling well so we started FIP treatment right away.  She declined rapidly.  That night we took her to Northeast Indiana Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital (NEIVES) in Ft. Wayne.  We left her in their care, but about 11:30pm she passed.  She had been a sickly kitty from the beginning but found much comfort with SCHMOOKIE.  We will miss her quiet little meows.

ZEEBA was sick on Sunday, 8/30.  We found that she had ulcers in her mouth, called Calicivirus (FCV).  She is being treated and is much better now.  More about this condition is below.

Holds:

WILLOW's adoption was delayed and will be September 14th.

SAZAZ will be going home very soon.  She doesn't have to travel far.  Our own Debbie will be taking in another big kitty for her very own.  We are so happy for Debbie and Sazaz!!!!

We have a lot of applications that we are reviewing, so look for more holds and adoptions soon!

 Rumpelstiltskin Update: 3 Weeks In! 

We are officially three weeks into adopting our newest family member, Rumpelstiltskin (aka Rumpels), and he is slowly but surely settling into his new kingdom! As one can imagine having only ever lived at FFRC for the past 3.5 years, a new home and environment has been quite the adjustment!

Here is how his journey has been going:

 Week 1: Total cave-dweller mode. Rumpels stuck to his safe zone in the bedroom, spending almost all of his time curled up in his little cat hut—which we have officially re-named his "turtle shell." 

 Week 2: The big sibling introduction! He started venturing out mostly at night for quick little peaks around the house before darting back to his cozy room. He also discovered he could observe all the action under the buffet of the kitchen. Ali had a lot to say about the new roommate at first (so. much. hissing. ), but things are cooling down significantly now! Big Brother Theo is glad to have someone else to team up against Ali in Hallway Racing.

 Week 3: Progress! Rumpels is coming out way more during the day. We’re letting him go strictly on "Rumpels Time" so he feels completely safe and comfortable at his own pace. He is mostly nocturnal coming out to "play" around 8:45 on the dot. However, this morning he greeted us from his cat tree and demanded pets.

He is making so much progress! He is the BIGGEST lovebug! He is obsessed with pets and brushies, he is genuinely the drooliest boy in the world when he’s happy, and he has the absolute cutest, meekest little chirp-meow you've ever heard. 

We love this sweet boy so much! We will keep working with him until he feels 100% at home

On this day 4 years ago (9/2/22), we adopted MURIEL and DEACON (LEXIE and NIKO) from FFRC. Such a happy memory, but we love them even more today.

Calicivirus (FCV):

Calicivirus disease, or feline calicivirus (FCV), is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects cats, causing respiratory issues and oral disease. It is particularly prevalent in environments with many cats, such as shelters and breeding facilities.

Feline calicivirus (FCV) is a common viral infection of domestic cats. The virus causes upper respiratory disease that often closely resembles Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (FVR), and both viruses can cause the syndrome known as “Cat Flu”, with generalized inflammation of the upper respiratory tract and eyes, leading to sneezing, bilateral ocular discharge, a high temperature, dullness and inappetence.

While most cats do eventually recover, many recovered cats become chronic carriers of the virus, able to spread the virus to other cats. Up to 10% of household pet cats have been found to shed calicivirus.

Fatalities are rare, but do occur. Vaccines given to kittens, with booster vaccinations in later life as needed, ensure that FCV is usually effectively controlled in pet cats. Colonies of feral cats can suffer serious problems from the virus. There are nearly fifty strains of feline calicivirus, causing disease of variable virulence and severity.

September is Happy Cat Month

Happy Cat Month occurs annually throughout September (September 1–30) and was created by the CATalyst Council, a nonprofit organization focused on feline welfare Catster+2. Its purpose is to promote the health, well-being, and enrichment of domestic cats, countering misconceptions that cats require less care than dogs. The month emphasizes regular veterinary visits, proper nutrition, mental stimulation, and social interaction to ensure cats live long, healthy lives Catster+1

Other:

Edna (Gem) did some great research and found that the extra fee for the Ohio Spay and Neuter Specialty License Plate goes towards a fund that supplies grants to Ohio rescues. Edna took this to task and submitted the grant proposal. FFRC has received a $1,000 grant that can be used towards spay and neuters. Thank you so much Gem and the State of Ohio!!!

THANK YOU, Friends of Felines!

A few months ago, CHEWIE, a sweet female cat, was abandoned in a carrier at our fire station. Even though Friends Of Felines Rescue Center was already at capacity, they were willing to help make sure she received the care she needed.

While we’re thankful we were able to find help for Chewie, abandoning an animal at the fire station is not the right solution. Our first responders already give countless hours protecting our community, and our station is not staffed around the clock, meaning an animal left outside may go unnoticed for an extended period of time.

Friends of Felines does incredible work and is always in need of supplies, volunteers, and financial support.

Chewie is now looking for her forever home! Learn more about adopting her.

Megan's other business has some major technical issues this week, but special thanks to Amy's Dad for fixing everything! We saved Amy, and Amy's dad saved Megan's business. Kindness is always a reciprocal process. Take the time to do one random act of kindness and see how it is returned!

On Megan's vacation day, she made it a family day bay taking Eric and GIZMO (Gizzy) to the beach. I'm not sure if Gizzy is enjoying the day off as much as Momma did.

Oh wait, yeah, this was fun!
