FFRC Blog Week Ending April 27, 2024

New Cats:

Due to a hoarding case in MI, a  rescue group in Toledo has been working to rescue  90 cats.  The police are involved.  They have rehomed 50 cats and have reached out to other rescues and shelters for help. They need to rehome these cats before the end of month or the cats will be euthanized.  We FFRC have  taken in 5 cats and are rearranging the office to do this.

They are all here and scared but are safe and being cared for getting ready to someday soon be available for adoption.

3 girls:

2 of the girls are very shy, the other one is fine.  Their names are:

Bellamy

Emmy

TigerLilly

The two boys are unsocial at this point.  They are very scared and very nervous.

Their names are:

Chowder

Gordy

Both boys and1 girl were sent for neutering. One girl already spayed.  The other will be at some point.

Two new cats were found locally and are now safely in the care of FFRC.

Little inkie. She is about 6 months silky soft and very sweet Name = Purrscilla

She was found alone in a trailer park

Tortie already spayed.  Edna (Gem), our moderator and volunteer, was able to rescue her and bring her to FFRC for the beginning of a new life.

She is 8-9 months to a year.  Very skinny 4 lbs should be 8 lbs Name = Foxy

Pictures of all the new kitties are on our Facebook page and our Flickr page:

Adoptions:

There were no adoptions for the week.

Health Updates:

Four orphans have now been tested.  All tested negative. All are doing well and gaining weight.

Stripe (barn kitty)  has had a problem with not pooping.  After trying several different treatments he went to the vet for tests and treatment.

Stripe is now doing well and is home in the barn where he lives.  He is happy and doing well and everything is flowing nicely.

Rumplestiltskin continues to do well and his leg is healing nicely.  He has even gone on a few supervised walks to help strengthen his rear leg.  It’s bending as it should.

Other Updates:

The weekly bills were much higher than expected, including:

--Vet bill of $2,000

--Bulk delivery of litter = $1,500

--Lynette’s computer passed after a long, painful descent into madness.  Revival was not possible and a new one is being ordered

A local company stepped forward and pledged to match any donations up to $3,000 to help pay the bills.  This kicked off a flurry of activity and kindness.

Then Friends Tim and Julie said they would match up to $1,000 for any donations made for this three day fundraiser.

The fundraiser has yielded:

$14,402.00

Thank you to all our Friends for easing worry and paying off the bills with money left over to pay for needed upcoming medical bills.

Changes to our Adoption Policy:

We have made some changes to our adoption policy.  We haven’t made changes in several years and the following changes are being done for the good of our cats:

--No holds for more than 2 weeks

--No holds or adoptions on cats not on our petfinders site,  Cats are put up on the petfinders site once they pass all their physicals, shots and health goals.

--Adoption fee is now $150

These changes are now in effect and going forward.  Thank you for your understanding.

It’s been a busy week and we can’t thank our Friends enough.  Without YOU, where would our cats be?

With Gratitude, we look forward to another week of doing the best for our beloved cats.

Other Updates:

Planning has begun on our biggest fundraiser of the year.  This is the ‘a-thon’ annual fundraiser that focuses on needed funds to help reach our goals.  The theme of this year’s event is to create an overall fund where money can be used to help ‘sustain’ FFRC during the highs and lows of the financial aspects of running the rescue.

The fundraiser will  begin June 17th and end June 22nd.
Last year $94,000 was raised,   The prior year $80,000 was raised.

We are hoping to raise enough money to lessen the stress of always being behind in our bills.  More details will be coming up.

We have always been blessed to receive a discount with our Vet, and were notified this week that the Veterinarian  office is no longer in a financial position to continue with the discount.

So the ‘de-stress a-thon’ (name to be determined) will become an even more important event.

Lots of great visitors this week from the cam world.  Love visitors and the cats love them too.

Tigerlilly - a family was taking care of her and unfortunately let her out while her family was on vacation.  A search was done in Defiance and she wasn’t found.  Once her family returned from vacation they also searched and called all the shelters and rescues in the area and it turns out that Tigerlilly, who had just turned up at FFRC the previous few days, was Maybelline! She is now happily home with her family.

Good portion of the week has been focused on de-winterizing things around the property.

Nyota had Squizzle and Achoo over last night for some snacks and friend time.  After a few hours they decided they had visited long enough and knocked on the door to be let back out to the Center.  The timing was good as Nyota likes to watch ‘her shows’ on Thursdays without any interruptions from other cats.

Health updates:

Stripe is a barney (16) years old and needed some blood work done.  The blood work came back well but he does have some dental work needed and a little bowel issue.

Several people have mentioned that Buddy has been drinking a lot of water and we are aware and working on this issue.

Yellowstone has been limping a bit for a few weeks and we are aware of it and he is being monitored.  It is nothing serious, no breaks and his spirit is upbeat.  He needs a little ‘quiet’ time in the back for a few days.

Our two newest cats (Zorro and Jezzabelle) are doing well and adjusting well to their new world.  Both are ‘big’ cats and make quite the presence.

Rumplestiltskin is doing great.  He hates taking his meds but he’s doing great.  Walking a little on his leg and bending! About 4 weeks of rehab to go.

Pelican is getting better with shyness and may be ready to soon come into the main center.

Adoptions:

There were no adoptions this week.

We have heard from Jan’s new owner and Jan (now Ginny) is doing very well.

And Willow is also doing well in her new home being loved and loving.
